Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. Roaming Rhone. This wine will transport you to the South of France. Five generations of Perrin winemaking culminate here as you breathe in aromas of candied cherries, plum, spice, and earthy tones. There's volumes of juicy cherry flavors surrounded by good ripe tannins on the medium-bodied palate. Gourmets can savor it with chicken or lamb tajine.

Most of the wines that we have reviewed are made from a single grape variety. This wine, like most of the wines in the southern Rhone Valley, is a blend, in this case 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 10% Cinsault.

My first meal consisted of rib steak and fried potatoes. The steak was marinated in a homemade ketchup and horseradish mustard sauce. By accident too much mustard fell into the sauce, but I didn't want to throw it out and start over again. No problem, this wine rose to the challenge easily and wasn't in the least overwhelmed by all that horseradish. I still tasted dark fruits and spices.

My next meal involved slow cooked ribs and potatoes. The wine was very round and full. While it wasn't complex it was quite pleasant. In addition to the above components I tasted a bit of tar. When the food was gone the wine tasted peppery. I liked it.

Once again I went to beef, this time a slow cooked beef stew. The wine was a bit chewy. It was powerful and mouth-filling.

The first cheese was a French Saint-Aubin, a soft cow's milk cheese traditionally packed in a wooden box. This cheese has a creamy brie-like texture and a stronger taste. Unlike many other wines, this Cotes du Rhone retained its fruit when paired with the Saint-Aubin.

I next tried the wine with an Italian Bel Paese, a mild buttery cheese suggested to accompany fruity wines or to be eaten alone as a snack or a dessert. This combination was even better; the wine became rounder. Only a few precious sips remained in the bottle. Instead of slicing off a bit more cheese, I tried it with a slice of mint chocolate cake. Unfortunately the combination was no success, the cake denatured the wine a bit. But, as you may know, I do not blame a wine for my unusual unorthodox food pairing attempts that come up short.

Final verdict. I found this wine to be a real winner, especially in light of its moderate price. I'll be buying it again, but not before tasting several other wines from both the north and the south of the Rhone Valley.

You do not want to have to sharpen your steak knife after cutting your steak. So, you will want to make sure that your rib eye steaks are at room temperature before throwing them on the grill. The reason for this is that a cold or partially frozen steak will be a bit tough in cooked on the grill before reaching room temperature.

Now, put your steak knives and rib eyes aside and grab a piece of tin foil. You should fold the tin foil, doubling it, and make sure that the piece is about ten by ten inches. Take a garlic clove and remove the paper outer protection from the bulb. Do not break the bulb up. Just set that in the middle of your foil. Arrange the foil around the bulb in the form of a cup. Sprinkle basil and rosemary over the garlic and then add some oil; I prefer olive oil.

You may want to use your steak knife to spread the garlic clove open a little bit, but do not break it apart. Just allow the oil to get inside of it. Once this is completed, wrap the clove up completely and set it on the grill. You will need to cook this clove for about thirty minutes. You can cook it while you cook your steaks.

Now, prepare your rib eye steaks. You will not need to cut your steak or trim any fat with your steak knife. I leave my steaks the way they come before grilling due to the fact that the grill will melt down some of the fat.

I season my steaks with salt and pepper for this recipe as the garlic will provide a lot of the seasoning flavor. You have two choices when it comes to cooking your steaks and I do both not preferring one to the other. You can sear you rib eyes by pan searing them in hot oil on each side four about forty five seconds, or you can throw them straight onto the grill without searing.

May I suggest a couple of corn on the cobs to go with your meal? I love grilled corn on the cob. There are a dozen ways to make it, but I like to keep it simple. I wash of the corn leaving the husk on it and throw it on the grill just like that. I leave the husk on to protect the kernels from burning or drying out while cooking.

You may want to take your steak knife and cut the end of the corn off where it was attached to the plant. That is up to you but if you have a small grill and need the room, it may be a good idea.

Throw the corn on the grill with your garlic in foil. Now the corn will need to cook for only about fifteen to twenty minutes. Ensure that you have a pair of thick glow to pick the corn up and remove the husk when it is done. You can check the corn every now and then by pulling back the husk near the top and penetrating one of the kernels with your steak knife. If it is full of fluid, then it is ready.

Put you steak knife aside and throw your steaks on the grill. They will need to cook for about ten to fifteen minutes for medium rare; which has the most flavor in my humble opinion. Or you can cook them an additional five minutes or so for medium and well done.

It is fine if the flames grow and lick your steaks a bit. This will not hurt them and in fact will add a bit more flavor to the meat. It will also give your steaks those nifty looking grill marks. If things get out of control and your grill starts to look like a blazing inferno, squirt the flames lightly with a water filled squirt bottle. Once everything is done, remove it all from the grill.

Take your steak knife and cut into one of the rib eyes and check to ensure that it is cooked to your liking by observation. Then, open the foil up and remove the garlic. You will want to use a fork to mash the garlic cloves into the steak. Remove any of the papery coverings that come off on your steaks. Then, pour the oil and spices over your steaks that remain in the foil.

Sometimes I wonder why I keep reading up on healthy ways to cook and eat. Every time I do I find something else that I'm doing wrong and it's usually bad enough to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The discoveries that I made today are no different.

I found out that it's dangerous to use plastic to cover the food while you heat it up in the microwave because it's been shown to cause cancer. I also found out that I shouldn't be freezing bottles of water before I drink them. I should have known, since one of my favorite things is icy cold water and I like to freeze the bottles and drink them as the water melts.

I'm beginning to believe that scientists have found my list of favorite foods and are hard at work to ruin it for me. If it were not for trying to make sure my kids are fed in a healthy way, I'd stop my research and just eat what I wanted to. Unfortunately I have a duty to them, so I read on.

Another thing I read about is the benefits of raw foods. I guess you're wondering why that should upset me. It upsets me because I always thought that if there was one thing I was doing right, it was the way I handled fresh fruits and vegetables. We've all heard the warnings of making sure that before consuming them, they were thoroughly washed since harmful toxins and pesticides could be clinging to them. I had already been doing this, since I had no confidence that the stores were washing all the dirt off of them.

Let's not even talk about how many other people might have handled them before they came home with me. The mistake I've been making is by cooking them so thoroughly. Research has found that heat hurts the molecular structure of the vegetables, making them less healthy for you.

I won't pretend not to know that cooking vegetables reduces the vitamins and minerals in them. What I didn't know and was horrified to learn was that it actually changes the molecular structure into a toxin that actually attacks our systems. Go figure. Here I am, thinking I'm feeding my family a healthy diet and instead I find out that I'm feeding them food that is not only not contributing to their health, but harming it as well.

Who would have thought that? Well, at least now that I'm informed I can be more careful about how I prepare foods. Maybe I should just serve salads and ice cream. Salads have raw, healthy vegetables and ice cream is a dairy product and dairy contains nice, healthy calcium, right? Works for me.

Food industries process food so that it can be sold to consumers. In our fast-paced world, we have been conditioned to expect food that is conveniently packaged, easy and quick to prepare, has a long shelf life, and tastes good. Tantalizing taste is now the main criterion for choosing food.

Food loses its nutrient value when it is processed. For example, refined white flour contains only two or three nutrients, compared to more than fifty in whole-wheat flour. Whenever food is heated to temperatures in excess of 112 degrees fahrenheit (44 degrees celsius), most of the natural enzymes in it are destroyed.

Lean, juicy beef, mutton, and veal, form the basis of all good soups; therefore it is advisable to procure those pieces which afford the richest succulence, and such as are fresh-killed. Stale meat renders them bad, and fat is not so well adapted for making them. The principal art in composing good rich soup, is so to proportion the several ingredients that the flavour of one shall not predominate over another, and that all the articles of which it is composed, shall form an agreeable whole. To accomplish this, care must be taken that the roots and herbs are perfectly well cleaned, and that the water is proportioned to the quantity of meat and other ingredients. Generally a quart of water may be allowed to a pound of meat for soups, and half the quantity for gravies.

In making soups or gravies, gentle stewing or simmering is incomparably the best. It may be remarked, however, that a really good soup can never be made but in a well-closed vessel, although, perhaps, greater wholesomeness is obtained by an occasional exposure to the air. Soups will, in general, take from three to six hours doing, and are much better prepared the day before they are wanted. When the soup is cold, the fat may be much more easily and completely removed; and when it is poured off, care must be taken not to disturb the settlings at the bottom of the vessel, which are so fine that they will escape through a sieve. A tamis is the best strainer, and if the soup is strained while it is hot, let the tamis or cloth be previously soaked in cold water. Clear soups must be perfectly transparent, and thickened soups about the consistence of cream. To thicken and give body to soups and gravies, potato-mucilage, arrow-root, bread-raspings, isinglass, flour and butter, barley, rice, or oatmeal, in a little water rubbed well together, are used.

A piece of boiled beef pounded to a pulp, with a bit of butter and flour, and rubbed through a sieve, and gradually incorporated with the soup, will be found an excellent addition. When the soup appears to be too thin or too weak , the cover of the boiler should be taken off, and the contents allowed to boil till some of the watery parts have evaporated; or some of the thickening materials, above mentioned, should be added. When soups and gravies are kept from day to day in hot weather, they should be warmed up every day, and put into fresh scalded pans or tureens, and placed in a cool cellar. In temperate weather, every other day may be sufficient.

Various herbs and vegetables are required for the purpose of making soups and gravies. Of these the principal are, Scotch barley, pearl barley, wheat flour, oatmeal, bread-raspings, pease, beans, rice, vermicelli, macaroni, isinglass, potato-mucilage, mushroom or mushroom ketchup, champignons, parsnips, carrots, beetroot, turnips, garlic, shalots and onions. Sliced onions, fried with butter and flour till they are browned, and then rubbed through a sieve, are excellent to heighten the colour and flavour of brown soups and sauces, and form the basis of many of the fine relishes furnished by the cook. The older and drier the onion, the stronger will be its flavour. Leeks, cucumber, or burnet vinegar; celery or celery-seed pounded. The latter, though equally strong, does not impart the delicate sweetness of the fresh vegetable; and when used as a substitute, its flavour should be corrected by the addition of a bit of sugar. Cress-seed, parsley, common thyme, lemon thyme, orange thyme, knotted marjoram, sage, mint, winter savoury, and basil. As fresh green basil is seldom to be procured, and its fine flavour is soon lost, the best way of preserving the extract is by pouring wine on the fresh leaves.

For the seasoning of soups, bay-leaves, tomato, tarragon, chervil, burnet, allspice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, mace, black and white pepper, essence of anchovy, lemon-peel, and juice, and Seville orange-juice, are all taken. The latter imparts a finer flavour than the lemon, and the acid is much milder. These materials, with wine, mushroom ketchup, Harvey's sauce, tomato sauce, combined in various proportions, are, with other ingredients, manipulated into an almost endless variety of excellent soups and gravies. Soups, which are intended to constitute the principal part of a meal, certainly ought not to be flavoured like sauces, which are only designed to give a relish to some particular dish.

Gourmet Barbeque, My Personal Favorite!

Lest anyone misunderstand the intent of this article, let me say up front that I, in no way, am knocking the men and women who comprise the fine dining industry. I am not casting aspersions on the food, quality of food, quantity of food and character of anything served at a gourmet restaurant. There is definitely a place for fine food dining in this country!

Barbeque however, is one of the great delicacies of the south, no matter whether its chicken, pork ribs, beef brisket or pork chops. My personal favorite, barbequed pork ribs are rarely, if ever, found on the menu of fine dining restaurants. That omission is an indication of how this great food item is discriminated against by gourmet restaurants.

Maybe the barbequed rib has just not climbed its way to the top of modern culinary society yet. My thoughts are that it is just too good to be placed on the same menu as a "Pan Seared French Cut Pork Loin Chop served with baby new potatoes and a cheery medley of spring greens."

Imagine opening the menu at any stuffed shirt restaurant where the dinner meals start at $50.00 per person and reading down:

"Tonight's house specialty is Honey and Soy Glazed Sea Bass, garnished with tiny sprigs of rosemary. Sides are delightful broccoli crowns steamed with basil and tarragon. A creamy garlic mashed potato with fresh clipped chives round out the meal. Our wine cellar is excellent"

Just below this you might find other offerings to temp your pallet such as:

Somewhere near the bottom of the menu you should see in proud bold, block lettering: "Hickory Smoked Rack of Ribs! Slow cooked in a hickory smoker for 3 -4 hours, these pork ribs will fall off the bone as you lick the barbeque sauce from your fingers. Hand rubbed into the meat we feature an assortment of spices: garlic salt, salt, pepper, oregano, chili pepper, cayenne pepper, and onion pepper. While the meat is cooking in the smoking chamber it is kissed with our own secret red sauce."

This sounds a little uppity for the good old barbequed rib doesn't it? Ribs, chicken and the like have been relegated to the kitchens of Ma and Pa diners and rib houses that specialize in barbeque. Most of these restaurants are packed with faithful customers most of the time; especially on the weekends. Barbeque aficionados are a loyal crowd. When they find a place they like, they keep coming back for more!

Why then is barbeque not highlighted on the menus of the finest gourmet restaurants in America? Portions! That's the key. In most places of fine dining, the portions of any one thing are ridiculously small. On the other hand when you leave a barbeque joint you're holding your belly because you're stuffed. No small amounts of food here!

Why then do they have portion control at fine dining joints? I think the gourmet food people stumbled onto something a long time ago that the barbeque business has yet to realize. The entrees and appetizers at most of these places are quite expensive. Add that fact that most of the meals featured are weird! They're not usually something that we would prepare at home, so frankly, no one knows how each item is really supposed to taste.

Then, because gourmet restaurants blatantly keep their prices at extortion levels, we feel that whatever they feed us is wonderful because it costs so much! It simply has to be good! Most of us would have to carry our lunch to work for a month in order to pay for one night out with Chef Pierre. That being the case the meals must be wonderful regardless of what our tummies are telling us.

That's it in a nutshell. Serve very small portions, make it so that no one knows if it's good or bad, make it expensive and put the knives and forks in the correct positions. It can then be called gourmet.

Even though in the south every red blooded American male thinks he can cook the best barbeque in the world, we still enjoy going out to eat someone else's cooking and enjoy the ambience of knotty pine paneling and vinyl table cloths that would enhance any dining experience. Maybe it would make a difference if there was a maitre d' to seat us as we entered the establishment.

Two Ways To Cook Chicken

First of all, there are two basic methods for cooking: dry heat and moist heat. Dry heat methods include baking, roasting, grilling, sauteing, and deep frying. Moist heat methods include microwaving, poaching, baking in parchment, steaming, and slow cooking.

How Long To Cook Chicken

Here are some general rules to help you. When cooking chicken breasts with dry heat, use high heat and cook for a short period of time. Many experts recommend that chicken breast meat must be cooked to an internal temperature of 170 degrees F, but others say 160 degrees F is fine. You will have a juicier chicken if you cook to 160 degrees F. Chicken must reach a temperature of 160 degrees F for 5.2 seconds to kill pathogens.

Recommended Temperature When Cooking Chicken

Currently, the USDA is recommending that, because of bird flu fears, chicken should be cooked to a temperature of 165 degrees F. Remember that the meat will continue to cook after it's removed from the heat; the internal temperature will rise about 5-10 degrees in the first few minutes it's off the heat.

The final temperature you choose should be based on the health and risk factors of those who will be eating the meat. If you have young children, elderly persons, or those with a compromised immune system in your household, choose the higher temperature. Healthy people above the age of 5 have built up a tolerance to low levels of bacteria and would not get sick when served chicken cooked to the lower temperatures.

Here is another tip for you. When cooling the meat, be sure to do it very quickly, preferably in a container placed in an ice water bath. Also do keep the cooked chicken in the refrigerator no longer than 3-4 days to ensure the quality of your food.

Who doesn't love PEZ? The cute little dispensers with the interchangeable heads that flip back to give us our sweets on demand are a hit with kids and collectors, alike. What could be more low-tech than a design that's been around since the 1950's? What could be more low-tech than a plastic rectangular tube topped with a colorful plastic head? My personal favorite is a Yoda I got back in middle school about 20 years ago. There is nothing absolutely whatsoever hi-tech about PEZ. But, as they say, all good things come to those who wait. It took a clever guy with a creative streak and an idea whose time had come to take PEZ into the realm of gadgetry.

Once upon a time, the makers of Altoids candies held a contest. They asked people to come up with original ideas to recycle their candy tins after the candy was gone. The winner was the individual who stuffed the iPod speaker inside the empty Altoid tin. Great, you say, but this is supposed to be about PEZ going hi-tech. What does Altoids and Ipods got to do with anything? Everything, as you'll see in a moment.

In Missouri, a stay-at-home dad and gadget designer Patrick Misterovich followed that contest and saw that iPod Altoid tin. As a clever and creative guy, he became inspired to see what else could be done with empty candy containers. He had a vision, a creative bent and a little bit of luck, as all good inventors are want to possess. "I saw that (Altoid iPod speaker) and I thought, that's pretty neat, taking something that you wouldn't think of as electronics and turning it into a device," Misterovich said. "When I started thinking about how I could do that, the Pez idea came to me, and I figured it was something that was pretty cool that could appeal to a lot of people."

Patrick didn't start with the idea of a PEZ mp3 player right out of the gate, though. He made a list of possible candy-tach combinations. How about a LifeSaver laser pointer? Or a USB drive in a gum pack? And then, he saw it - PEZ on the candy side of the list and mp3 player on the gadget side. Like two lost soul mates on opposite sides of the stream, they simply needed Patrick to bridge the gap between them. Patrick didn't just sit there staring at the two of them. He took action. In less than 5 minutes, He had emailed the PEZ company. He was going to need permission to license his product using their product. He got the number of the PEZ candy company and called. Now, I don't know who you call at a candy company when you want to do something completely un-candy-like with their product, or how you go about presenting the idea, but somehow Patrick either knew or figured it out along the way. He's a clever guy, you know? After about two hours, he had licensing permission from the PEZ people to run with his "crazy" idea, and that's exactly what he did.

That weekend, he spent a few bucks on a Google ad and ran a test market to see if anyone would want to even buy the thing. The response was a bit overwhelming. Everyone from teens to toy collectors were apparent PEZ fanatics who would, indeed, buy a PEZ mp3 player if he would make and sell one.

Patrick's PEZ mp3 player had the capacity to hold 512 MB of music and the ability to switch out its rather generic looking head with any other PEZ dispenser head. Yay! Yoda could hold my tunes! It seems the only complaint critics had when the device hit the market was that it DIDN'T have the capability to hold actual PEZ candies. Oh well, not every invention is perfect, I suppose.

Patrick made some press announcements to introduce his PEZ mp3 player to a hi-tech hungry world. He started a website and was soon the topic of every candy, gadget, business and music blog in cyberspace. In the Spring of 2005, Patrick was king of the cool kids' table!

His company, Lincoln West Studio, sold the PEZ mp3 players for $99. His first production of 1500 units sold out rather quickly. PEZ granted permission for a second production run. That's when the trouble started, apparently. Because his device was electronic, it had to pass certification by the Underwriters' Laboratories to ensure compliance with safety standards. Once again, Patrick contacted the right folks and in no time, had the UL certification and the symbol to match. He once again issued statements to the press and the blogosphere that everything was a go on the PEZ pop tune provider. The next run of PEZ mp3 players would be due out in the Spring of 2007. And that's the last anyone has heard of him.

There's been no word from Patrick since. His website is defunct, his domain up for sale. Did big business put the little guy out of business? Did the dad working form his basement give up on his dream? Or did he just move on to something else? The world may never know. The few PEZ mp3 players available online are for the serious collector with serious money.

Once upon a time, a man had a dream and a PEZ dispenser was, for a short time, more than a candy dispenser. Gives a new meaning to the phrase `"sweet music`" doesn't it?

Breast enhancement is being increasingly used today. Once thought only to be something that celebrities or rich people had done, breast augmentation is now frequent among all strata's of the general population. Whilst the finished surgical results typically work really well, improving the patient's perceived outlook and lives, what must be remembered are the small but not irrelevant associated potential risks. This is after all surgery, a highly invasive procedure that requires the careful consultation and application of experts.

Breast enhancement surgery can lead to a whole host of complications, two of which are mentioned below:

Necrosis:

This is where injury and/ or disease kills off groups of cells around the implant in the weeks after surgery. Such an occurrence makes the healing of the wound surrounding the implant difficult. In the worst cases the implant may have to be removed to enable the affected area to be effectively cleaned and then healed.

Necrosis of breast tissue can be more likely if the patient:

smokes

already has an infection

uses steroids

The Magos teen is a fruit that is unique to South-East Asia. The fruit is extremely hard to grow and it often takes 8-15 years for a tree to bear fruits. Known as the capital of the North, Tripoli, 85 kilometres north of Beirut, has a special character all of its own. The castle has been renovated and changed many times during its history, most recently in the early 19th century.

When shopping in the old markets or downtown area, remember that gold is a good buy. Other popular items are Tripolis famous sweets and traditional olive oil based soap, water pipes and brass work. A good place to find seafood restaurants and fish markets. The cities most comfortable hotels and Western style restaurants can be found in the beach resorts south of the city.

There are many historical places of interest in Tripoli. Forty five buildings in the city, many dating from the 14th century, have been registered as historical sites. Secular buildings include the hammam or bathing house which followed the classical pattern of Roman Byzantine baths and the khans and caravansary. The souks, together with the khans, form an agglomeration of various trades where tailors, jewellers, perfumers, tanners and soap makers work in surroundings that have changed very little over the last 500 years.

Overlooking the sea is the imposing Citadel of Tripoli known as Saint Gillers which has been renovated and changed many times during its history. Of further interest is The Great Mosque that was completed in 1315. Its large courtyard is surrounded by porticos and a domed and vaulted prayer hall. Inside one can still see elements of Western architecture from the old church.

Jersey, one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel (in contrast to Jersey, USA), is a small yet beautiful island, perfect for a short holiday.

The island itself is as far south as France (St. Malo is less than 4 miles away and visible on a clear day) and so whilst still part of the British empire it benefits from far better weather.

This weather means not only an ideal place for camping, beaches and outdoor persuits but also you will see a profusion of plants and animals not normally seen on mainland Britain. Most notable is the only British population of the Green Lizard, often nicknamed the Jersey Green Lizard for just this very reason. Reaching around a foot long, and the males possessing a bright blue throat they are certainly a wonderful (if rare) sight to behold. Red squirrels can still be seen here for the eagle-eyed and dolphins may often be seen during the summer months.

Talking of beaches, whilst the island only measures a few miles long there are beaches for all ocassions. Long, sandy beaches perfect for surfing, more protected "sun bather" beaches and wild rocky outcrops covered in breeding sea birds. There are even some caves that only appear at low tide.

You can arrive by ferry or plane as Jersey is well served by both a safe port at St. Helier or an airport on the west side of the island.

Escaping from the attractive but busy main town of St. Helier, venture to the northern half of the island for the "true" Jersey experience. Rolling fields filled with Jersey cows producing thick, delicious cream. Farmers fields green with the tops of Jersey Royals - the finest new potatos around. Greenhouses filled with flame-red tomatoes. Foxglove-strewn laybys and meadows and the deep blue sea. There are also castles and fishing-boat filled coves to enjoy.

Jersey has a low national speed limit, plenty of narrow tracks and a "no caravan" rule making it a great place to walk or cycle, and an efficient local bus service covers the entire island. Exploring this small island is therefore safe, practical and incredibly good fun.

Other things to see here are the underground tunnels used by the Nazis during the war (the Channel Islands are as far north as the invasion got) and the world-famous Durrell Wildlife Preservation Trust (or just "Jersey Zoo"!). It was here that a small boy fell into the gorilla pit many years ago much to the shock of his parents. Alive, but scared, rather than being attacked, the boy was watched over and looked after by the gorillas until keepers were able to extract him safely.

Personally, I like to camp though there are plenty of hotels around (less self catering accomodation though) of an international standard. Being a tax haven, Jersey boasts rich businessmen, private jets and Ferraris making it a more British Monaco. English is spoken, they drive on the left and they use the pound. There is, however, a lovely "French" feel in the style of the houses, many French place names and in the excellent quality of food available here - especially the seafood.

The Channel Islands also consist of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark, all of which can be reached by one of the inter-island boat services in operation over the summer months and day trips to France from here are easy to arrange.

Livigno, Italy: A Poor To Prosperous Ski Resort

Other Italian villages make complaints about these continued benefits given solely to Livigno. The tax incentive continues on today because of the poverty that dominated the region for centuries. Today's inhabitants benefit mostly because of the hardships their grandparents faced.

These hardships didn't stop at poverty back then either. Because of an altitude over 1800 meters, Livigno suffered inadequate supply shipments, snubbing by the Italian government, frostbiting cold and death-swallowing avalanches. The last one killed seven people, destroyed more than a dozen houses and left a chilling wake of snow cover until the spring thaw. In fact, the first papers documenting the area-from the Middle Ages-referred to Livigno as "vinea et vineola." This actually translates from German to "Avalanche"-a seriously hard place to make a living.

The first people to come to Livigno were shepherds, poor migrants who toiled the land into something productive. Today, the sons and daughters of those shepherds enjoy a much easier way of life. Not only are more people bringing business and jobs, but also there are more economic opportunity and advancement. Neither Italy nor the EU rebuffs Livigno today. The area even has one of Italy's highest birth rates, corroborating the census that life here is finally getting easier.

The Livigno resort itself is located a few meters over 1800 meters. The Akua Granda or Spol River passes through the area year round. Livigno is part of the Italian Alps, though Switzerland has some rights to the mountain as they are close by. If bargain hunters are looking for last minute deals in the Alps-with tax-free benefits to boot-Livigno may be the best place to search.

The ski area itself is best suited to beginner and intermediate level skiers, located right above the Valtellina alpine valley near Switzerland. The slopes are the long, wide-open type, allowing beginners to zoom downhill without the pressures of running into someone or something. A week or two here will make a beginner more confident in attempting other narrower and faster slopes elsewhere in the Alps. With over 90 individual pistes and 110 km of runs, you'll be lucky to find your way back without a guide or map.

Historically speaking, Livigno Italian ski resort was visited by only a few outsiders and mainly catered to an Italian crowd. Because of newfound fascination, Livigno receives foreigners from England, Austria, Germany, and even Canada, the USA and Brazil. The slopes are guaranteed snow crusted while the prices are assuredly cheaper than higher-brow ski resorts. With Swiss prices so close and other Alps resorts closer, Livigno makes just as much economic sense as somewhere closer to home. (Hint: There's an airport two hours away. Getting here for a quick getaway is possible.)

The numbers tell why people are flocking to Livigno Italian ski resort, booking all-inclusive or last-minute packages. There are a total of 57 runs-six black, 25 blue and 26 red-plus kilometers of downhill pistes. If you like to get off the slopes, then you can try your skis at some 40 km of cross-country routes. There are over 30 lifts capable of transporting over 45,000 skiers and snowboarders per hour. The highest lift can take you to 3000 meters and with the lowest at 1800 meters-that's a difference of 1200 meters-snow is assured (24 snow cannons provided)! The slopes face a southeast and northwest direction, giving sun and snow lovers the time of their lives.
